What to Expect Welcome to the Sleep Medicine Associates, LLC (SMA). At SMA, we pride ourselves on providing high quality, comprehensive care that is in keeping with the practice standards set forth by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). These practice standards include a recommendation for a comprehensive evaluation at the outset of your interaction with your sleep doctor. This evaluation takes place as part of your initial consultation appointment with SMA. At this consultation appointment, you will be asked questions related to your sleep history, medical history, and social/psychological history. You will be asked to complete some forms, including some brief screening tests. These forms can also be in advance of your appointment by visiting the “New Patient Forms” link on our website. A physical examination will also be conducted as part of your consultation appointment. The consultation appointment may involve you seeing more than one clinician, since the clinicians you will meet have different areas of expertise. At SMA, we assign clinical specialists to you based on your specific needs. At the conclusion of your consultation appointment, we will formulate a working sleep disorder diagnosis based on the information you provide during the consultation. Extensive time is spent providing education related to your sleep problems, and as a result the consultation appointment can take up to one hour. As part of the education process, we will discuss in detail any testing or further evaluation that may need to be done to help us establish a firm sleep disorder diagnosis. Testing sometimes involves an overnight sleep study in our laboratory or a home sleep test, and this test is scheduled at the end of your consultation appointment. A follow-up appointment in our sleep clinic to review your test results also will be scheduled at that time. It should be noted that a sleep study is not always necessary to establish your sleep disorder diagnosis. You can rest assured that our team of board certified sleep specialists is trained to handle any sleep problem. We look forward to meeting you at your consultation appointment, and thank you for choosing SMA.
